The President and Mrs. Obama are encouraging emerging leaders to apply to the White House Fellows Program. The Fellowship is the nationâs most prestigious program for leadership and public service. It is uniquely designed to provide exceptional young men and women first-hand experience working at the highest levels of the federal government and with other leaders from diverse fields. This is an excellent opportunity for young leaders to grow in their careers while giving back to the country.
Once appointed by the President, the Fellows spend a year in Washington, DC working full-time in a paid position in the offices of Cabinet Secretaries, senior White House staff, or other high-level Executive Branch officials. In addition to their jobs, Fellows take part in an education program during which they regularly meet in roundtable discussions with renowned leaders in the public and private sectors and travel domestically and internationally to study U.S. policy in action. The Fellowship Program is highly competitive and no more than 19 Fellows can be chosen per year. Founded by President Johnson in 1964, many of the Fellowship Programâs alumni- including the General Colin Powell, business leader and author Wes Moore, former Secretary of Labor Elaine Chao, and CNN Medical Correspondent Dr. Sanjay Gupta- call the experience transformational.
Applications for the White House Fellows Program are currently available online. The deadline for completed applications is January 13, 2012. You can learn more about the Program by viewing a recent video chat featuring staff and Fellows alumni. For more detailed information, you can also visit the White House Fellows website.
